The gift was the largest in Yale's history in nominal terms.

In September 2013, Yale president Peter Salovey announced that Johnson had given $250 million to support the construction of two new residential colleges costing $400 million. Johnson has also funded academic programs, including the Johnson Center for the Study of American Diplomacy and Brady–Johnson Program in Grand Strategy. In 2005, he was the principal donor to a renovation of the Yale Bowl. Johnson Field, used for field hockey, was opened in 2001. Johnson is one of his alma mater's largest benefactors, having given considerable sums to athletic and student facilities at Yale. Other members of the group include Scott Seligman, Philip Halperin, Alex Byer, and David S. Johnson is principal owner of the MLB San Francisco Giants, although he leaves team control duties to the head of the ownership group, Larry Baer. He was succeeded by his son Greg Johnson in 2013. In 1957, at the age of 24, he became CEO and is credited for taking the company public in 1971. Johnson and his brother, Rupert Johnson Jr., worked at Franklin Resources, a mutual fund company started by Rupert Sr. An ROTC cadet, he later served as a lieutenant in the United States Army stationed in Germany. At Yale he played offensive guard for the football team and waited dining hall tables as a scholarship student. Johnson attended Montclair High School, and then Yale College, where he graduated in 1954. His father's second marriage produced Rupert Jr., Charles' later business partner, and two other half-siblings. His father and mother divorced during his childhood, leaving Charles to live with his mother and four siblings. Since the company launched in the fall of 2015, Derby has produced campaigns with its agency and brand partners for Listerine, Lucky Charms, Johnson & Johnson, Sauza, Erno Laszlo and others.Charles Bartlett Johnson was born in 1933 in Montclair, New Jersey, to Rupert Harris Johnson and Florence Endler. Orchard joins Derby’s directorial roster, which includes Lucas Borrás, Nickolas Duarte, The Bozzwicks and John Poliquin. While Orchard hasn’t yet helmed a job for Derby, future projects can be expected to come from her in early 2017. I should mention that serving candy to kids at 9am is a very cheap trick, but it worked!” “We had less than one hour to film, so I thought playing a game of charades would be fun - they made up their own dreams and nightmares. When asked about a recent job, Orchard talked about working with the kids from Netflix’s Stranger Things for Teen Vogue. That’s usually the way I start each and every one of my projects.” I also do research to sort out what the story might actually look and feel like. “I’m interested in trying out some of the technical things, like practical lighting tricks, VFX and camera movements if it makes sense for the story’s look and tone.

That goes for any project, she says, whether it be commercial, narrative or experimental. I like having a starting point of knowing the character (so cliché, but how else?!) and then the tone and look follows.” Then I let my imagination wander and take inventory on the many ways to put those particulars into a story. We checked in with Brooklyn-based Orchard to find out how she works and what her process is like: “Whenever I start a project, I look at what the existing elements are and break them down to what’s key and what needs to be said or shown. Most recently, she has been directing for Loft and Teen Vogue.

She has worked with a variety of brands and magazines, including Bobbi Brown, Alice + Olivia, Jane, Travel + Leisure and Vibe. Formerly a graphic designer and art director, Orchard’s work in the creative departments of various brands and magazines has helped her to develop an eye for strong imagery in combination with humor and lyrical storytelling. New York-based production company Derby has added Catherine Orchard to its directorial roster.
